Tariffs and economic uncertainty slow sales in Los Cabos during the holiday weekend

The first holiday weekend of 2025 did not meet the expectations of local businesses, which in previous years recorded increases in their sales of 10% to 15%.

Vicente Ruiz Piña, president of the National Chamber of Commerce, Services and Tourism (Canaco) Los Cabos, said that the uncertainty due to the increase in tariffs affected the economic spillover.

The business chamber warned that the situation between the United States and Mexico is already impacting the sales of local merchants.

“This February bridge allowed the trade to sell a little more, but it was not like on other occasions. The bridge was a little relaxed, one of the causes of low sales is the issue of tariffs. People were a little withdrawn, the way they spent was not seen like other years. A small increase was seen, but not like other years, right now it was very minimal. The squares were with very few people, the visitors who go to the beaches to consume also had less spending because the weather did not help. They increased by 5%, we always talk about 10% to 15%, the expense now was minimal, it was not like other times.”

Although Los Cabos reached a hotel occupancy of 73% during the holiday weekend, according to the Hotel Association of the region, local commerce did not register a significant economic spillover.

Canaco is confident that the increase in the arrival of tourists in February, March and April will help improve the financial situation of small and medium-sized merchants.
