Tekit is experiencing significant tension after the arrest of five residents accused of lynching Ismael “Güero.” Police are monitoring the family and their property due to threats of revenge, and sports activities have been suspended.
Nearly a week after the lynching of Ismael “Güero,” tension continues to grow in Tekit, known as the capital of the Guayabera. The family of “Güero” has received threats and fears for their safety following the arrest and prosecution of five community members, identified by the Prosecutor’s Office as the main perpetrators of the lynching.
The family has reported threats of having their house burned down and other harm, leading them to request a protection order for their close relatives and property. Residents are upset because the detained individuals could face up to 50 years in prison.
The Judicial Branch of Yucatán announced that a control judge granted the protection requested by the Prosecutor’s Office. The State Police (SSP) has reported that they are maintaining close surveillance on the family’s property to ensure their safety. As a security measure, the mother and her immediate family have barricaded themselves in their home to avoid reprisals.
“Nothing will be the same. The tranquility and peace of Tekit have vanished,” said María Cristina Uicab, a community resident. Due to concerns about potential disturbances, all sports activities, including a soccer match between Tekit FC and Potros de Homún, have been suspended to ensure the safety of players and referees.
Throughout his life, “Güero” committed numerous high-impact crimes, including homicides, robberies, assaults, and attempted murders. Despite these actions, he was never prosecuted due to his mental health issues resulting from drug use.
The current atmosphere in Tekit is tense, with a lingering fear that something unfortunate could happen at any moment, largely due to social unrest over the arrests related to “Güero’s” death.
