A video showing the moment a dolphin dies during a show at a hotel in Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo, is circulating on social media.
The tragic event occurred at the Barceló Riviera Maya Hotel, which has previously faced allegations of mistreating marine mammals, according to Meganews. The Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa) is investigating the circumstances surrounding the dolphin’s death.
In the video, the dolphin named Plata is seen performing with other dolphins. During one of its jumps, Plata falls onto a concrete area. Trainers rush to check on its condition, but it is believed the dolphin died from the force of the impact.
Profepa will examine the operating conditions of the Dolphinaris Barceló dolphinarium, where the incident took place. The accident has sparked criticism from internet users, who condemn the use of dolphins and other animals as tourist attractions and highlight the consequences of their exploitation.
