Femicide violence in Chiapas broke all records in 2024. According to the human rights organization Melel Xojobal, gun murders against girls and adolescents tripled. Cases went from 10 in 2023 to 33 last year.
The escalation of violence in the entity governed by Morena has left a long tally of homicides, disappearances, massacres and murders of women for gender reasons.
Feminist groups such as 50+1 documented at least 40 femicides in Chiapas last year; the count by the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System recorded 28 cases. This under-reporting by the federal government, activists say, contributes to minimizing the tragedy.
The organisations also denounce disdain and negligence on the part of the authorities, as only seven of the 40 cases of femicide in 2024 were brought to court. They also accuse that the alert for gender violence declared in 2016 in seven municipalities has been useless.
