Querétaro seeks to strengthen tourism with Mexico City

The influx of tourists from Mexico City registers a decrease of up to 15% in the low seasons, explained the Secretary of Tourism of Querétaro, Adriana Vega Vázquez Mellado.

This trend, she explained, occurs only in certain times, because in the high seasons the same indicators remain.

“(It has decreased) in seasons, it is not constant, it has seasons. In the low (season) it affects up to 15%, but in the high season fortunately we continue to maintain the numbers to which we are accustomed,” she pointed out.

This reduction, she said, could be related to the saturation of federal highway 57, which links both entities and which usually registers a significant vehicle load, in addition to the maintenance works that are carried out on the road.

Therefore, the agency plans to strengthen the tourist promotion of the state in Mexico City, in order to attract travelers from the capital.

“Highway 57 is complicated, yes, indeed, but we also have other alternatives. Today what we are doing is a very strong campaign to take precautions, because of the repairs (on the road), because of the fact that it can take hours (to travel), but the campaign that we are reinforcing in Mexico City, we believe that for this summer we will reinforce it even more,” she said.

The campaign to attract tourism to Mexico City, she explained, consists of promoting the state’s wine region.

The state secretary specified that they plan to launch coupons that are incentives for purchasing tour operator or lodging services in advance.

“Come to the vineyards, take them in advance, before it was very easy to suddenly say: we are two and a half hours away (between Mexico City and Querétaro), sometimes you have that luck and sometimes you don’t. We are making different coupons so that, if they do it in advance, you have a better percentage of tour operators, in hotels, who have that advantage and plan it with more time,” he explained.

Tourist spillover in Querétaro increased 36.4% in 2024
During the last holiday weekend, the entity received between 75,000 and 80,000 tourists, mainly from Mexico City, San Luis Potosí, Guanajuato, State of Mexico and Hidalgo: an increase in foreign tourism from the United States and Canada is also perceived.

During that weekend, the average occupancy was 60%; and the economic spillover amounted to between 160 and 170 million pesos.

Regarding upcoming activities, the agency lists a romance tourism campaign for February 14; in addition to continuing to promote the state as a wedding destination.

In 2024, the state received 30 billion pesos in tourism revenue, reflecting an annual growth of more than 36%; in that year it received 7.5 million tourists and excursionists, an annual increase of 17%, according to records from the state’s Tourism Secretariat.
