Merida, Yucatán, has the highest cost for a basic basket in Mexico, amounting to 969.40 pesos, as reported by Iván Escalante Ruiz, head of the Federal Consumer Protection Agency (Profeco).

During President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo’s morning conference at the National Palace, Escalante Ruiz detailed the prices of basic baskets across Mexico. He highlighted that Merida’s basic basket costs 969.40 pesos, based on prices from the Walmart Campestre branch in the city. In stark contrast, the cheapest basic basket is found in Campeche, costing 684.10 pesos at Chedraui Campeche—a difference of 285.30 pesos.

According to Profeco, the basic basket, which includes 24 essential products, should not exceed 910.00 pesos. The basket comprises items such as edible vegetable oil, rice, tuna, sugar, beef, white onion, jalapeño pepper, pork, black beans, eggs, soap, tomato, milk, lemon, apple, banana, white bread, white potato, toilet paper, soup pasta, chicken meat, sardines, corn tortillas, and carrots.

The significant price disparity between Merida and Campeche underscores the varying costs of living within the country, highlighting the need for ongoing consumer protection and pricing regulations.
