Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced a new project that seeks to benefit both agricultural producers and consumers in the country. According to the president from Salvador Escalante, in Santa Clara del Cobre, Michoacán, the federal government will begin the production of the so-called “Chocolates of Well-Being”, which will be made with Mexican cocoa and distributed through the new Well-Being Stores.
This program will be managed by María Luisa Albores, former Secretary of the Environment and current head of Welfare, who will also lead the merger of Mexican Food Security (Segalmex) and Diconsa, two key entities in the strategy.
According to the information, the project will not be limited to chocolate. It will also include the purchase and marketing of other agricultural products such as corn, coffee and honey, which will be purchased directly from farmers at fair prices. The initiative’s main objective is to guarantee affordable food for the population, while eliminating intermediaries that usually make products more expensive.
During her speech, Sheinbaum Pardo highlighted that cocoa will be transformed into high-quality chocolate and sold at affordable prices in the Tiendas del Bienestar. According to the Mexican president, this model will allow producers to receive a fair payment for their crops, while consumers will be able to acquire quality products at reasonable prices.
“Cocoa will be purchased from Mexican producers, they will transform it and the ‘Chocolates del Bienestar’ will be sold in the Tiendas del Bienestar, so that there is well-made, well-prepared chocolate, with affordable prices for the people as well,” she said.
In addition to cocoa, the program includes the purchase of corn, coffee and honey, which will be collected and later distributed in the same chain. This strategy seeks to combat intermediaries, a practice that, in her words, “buys very cheap and sells dearly,” explained the head of the Federal Executive, who said that she will seek to benefit both producers and consumers.
A comprehensive approach to rural development
The announcement of the “Wellbeing Chocolates” is part of a broader strategy by the federal government to promote rural development and strengthen the country’s food sovereignty. By eliminating this figure and guaranteeing fair prices, the program aims to generate a positive impact both on the economy of small producers and on access to quality food for the general population.
With this initiative, Sheinbaum reaffirmed her commitment to social wellbeing and sustainable development, while promoting the consumption of national products. According to reports, the project also represents an opportunity to revalue Mexico’s agricultural wealth, especially in sectors such as cocoa, coffee and honey, which have great potential in both the domestic and international markets.
