In recent days, elements of the Mexican Navy, belonging to the Navy Secretariat (Semar), found a shipment of more than half a ton of apparent cocaine in the maritime zone near the coast of Chiapas.

According to the data shared by the corporation, naval personnel acting as Coast Guard were carrying out aerial and maritime surveillance work when they observed a suspicious vessel 361 kilometers from Chiapas territory.

Upon inspecting the boat, the uniformed officers found 13 packages made in the shape of bricks, which contained white powder with characteristics similar to those of cocaine. After an initial analysis in the field, the agents confirmed that the shipment had a weight of 590 kilograms.

In the same operation, the Mexican Navy carried out the arrest of two people who were in charge of the apparent drug. During their meeting with the authorities, the individuals identified themselves as Ecuadorian citizens.

“The seized objects and the people who allegedly broke the law, whose human rights and physical integrity were respected, were loaded onto a Mexican Navy ship to be taken to land and made available to the competent authorities for the integration of the corresponding investigation file,” the corporation stated in a report.

The estimates made by the Semar suggest that this seizure represents an economic impact of approximately 7.5 million dollars to the financial structure of the criminal groups, a figure that is equivalent to 154 million 270 thousand pesos at the current exchange rate.

“In this way, the Secretariat of the Navy through the Mexican Navy, through maritime, air and land surveillance operations, works to inhibit criminal activity in order to guarantee and maintain the rule of law at sea,” the institution said in the official report.

The last action of this kind reported by the Semar in Chiapas occurred in September 2024, when personnel from the Sixteenth Naval Region seized a ton and a half of cocaine in the municipality of Paredón.

According to the reconstruction of the events, the corporation’s agents were carrying out surveillance tours when they observed a vehicle overturned on the road. Upon approaching, they found that there were 1,500 packages of cocaine in the pick-up truck, as well as a person who was given first aid. The alleged criminal and the illicit cargo were placed at the disposal of the corresponding ministerial authority.
