A foreign student from the Autonomous University of the State of Mexico has drowned in Playa del Carmen, prompting an investigation by the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE).

Witnesses reported seeing the body floating between 6th and 8th streets north within the Federal Maritime Land Zone (ZOFEMAT). The body was brought to shore and the area was cordoned off while awaiting the arrival of the Forensic Medical Service to transfer the remains to the city morgue.

The incident was reported to 911 at approximately 4:40 p.m. The body, already showing signs of asphyxiation due to drowning, was found wearing only shorts. The victim was covered with a towel to maintain dignity and privacy.

The student was identified through a driver’s license and a student ID card from the Autonomous University of the State of Mexico’s Faculty of Architecture and Design. The driver’s license bore the name Carlos Alberto G. A., with a date of birth of December 10, 2000.

The body was transferred to the city morgue at nightfall. Authorities are working to locate the student’s relatives to formally identify the body and proceed with the necessary arrangements for its return to the place of origin.

Previous Incident

This marks the second drowning case in Playa del Carmen for 2025. The first occurred in January when a national tourist drowned after being swept away by the current under the pier. Despite attempts to revive him, he was declared dead after being adrift for over 30 minutes.

The FGE continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the student’s drowning to determine the cause of the incident.
