Migrants in transit through Oaxaca, who are part of a caravan, receive assistance from local authorities and civil organizations with accompaniment, medical attention and food.
A group of approximately 500 people arrived this Tuesday in Santiago Niltepec, in the eastern part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. Municipal authorities set up a sports area so that the migrants could set up a camp and rest before continuing their journey.
Medical care and humanitarian support
The organization Doctors without Borders installed care modules with nursing and psychology staff to provide free consultations.
Ricardo Santiago, from Doctors without Borders, highlighted the importance of migrants having access to health care during their transit through Mexico.
In addition, the Isthmus Region Food Bank, located in Santiago Niltepec, delivered backpacks with basic necessities, such as canned food, water and blankets.
Migrants are grateful for the support in Mexico
Some migrants expressed their gratitude for the help received in Oaxaca.
Geyson Alberto Arista, a Honduran migrant, said that “the United States is closing its doors to us, but the Mexican people have supported us with food and water.”
Andrea Ramírez, a Venezuelan migrant, said that in Mexico she has received support with food, lodging and medicine, elements that she considers essential in her journey.
Migrant caravan continues its journey
Despite the restrictions imposed by Donald Trump on border crossings, hundreds of migrants continue to transit through southern Mexico, in search of the American dream.
