The British company Diageo, dedicated to the manufacture and distribution of alcoholic beverages, announced a historic investment of 100 million pesos for water projects, in collaboration with the government of Jalisco and the federal government.

The company specified that the investment is made in collaboration with the State Water Commission of Jalisco, for the construction of a purple line that will facilitate the conduction and reuse of treated water for irrigation purposes in Ocotlán, which has a capacity to clean up to 300 liters of water per second, since it is one of the largest in Jalisco.

Diageo proposed that the new legislation on water have a long-term vision and be operationally viable. “Having sufficient resources for the challenge posed by climate change and clarity in the three levels of government,” said the international company when participating in the forum “Towards the construction of the National Water Program (PNH) 2025 – 2030” organized by Conagua.

The premium spirits company that distributes products in more than 180 countries, with its Don Julio brands for tequila, Johnnie Walker and Buchanan’s for whiskeys, and Smirnoff vodka, said that there must be clarity in the concessions and that water management based on a circular economy must be promoted.

The tequila producers of Jalisco proposed the construction of a General Water Law and reforms to the National Water Law to create a more solid legal framework, which adapts to the new realities and which has active cooperation between all actors to achieve availability, accessibility, affordability and water security.

It is necessary to grant “strong incentives to private investment in projects that promote the efficient use, reuse and substitution of first-use water,” he said.

The company that has more than 200 brands of alcoholic beverages in the world reported that to produce tequila, they grow agave that does not require irrigation and is environmentally sustainable; so the biggest challenge is its transformation.
