Despite the start of the high season in Los Cabos, the tourist area of Cabo San Lucas has not seen the same positive impact as in previous years. Ricardo Araoz, president of Colonos del Médano, said that businesses on El Médano beach have seen a decrease in sales. Although an exact percentage was not specified, business owners attribute this decrease to the growing offer of all-inclusive hotels and to urban image problems, factors that have made the beach area, bars, restaurants and even the marina less attractive.
Another factor that has led tourists to stay in their hotels is the constant traffic congestion, present at all hours. In addition, visitors have expressed that driving in the tourist area is complicated due to the lack of signs.
“The regular tourism that comes does not increase. But also keep in mind that the hotels already offer all-inclusive, so that automatically affects all the restaurants. If you add to that the situation of garbage, the Marina being very neglected, the streets without signs. The agents are ready to stop this kind of snicker that comes with rented cars; that is affecting us, the people of downtown. In downtown, cleanliness is elementary, they are not taking care of that. If you notice on Marina Boulevard that there are three lanes, the transport companies and taxi drivers occupy one lane, causing the lanes to be reduced.”
Businessmen in the tourist area have received constant complaints from tourists about the disorder in downtown Cabo San Lucas, pointing out that this situation is unattractive to them. Faced with this, Colonos del Médano calls on the authorities to take measures and improve the urban image.
“Tourists do not like that. They do not like that disorder and that there is no one to correct it, and that is in all of downtown Cabo San Lucas. Uncovered drains, many potholes, lines that are not cleaned, nomenclature that is not put. They do not know what the streets are called.”
During 2024, entrepreneurs from various local associations reported a drop of more than 60% in their sales, attributing it to the lack of maintenance and attractiveness in downtown Cabo San Lucas. In response, the Cabo San Lucas Delegation announced that rehabilitation work will begin on Friday, February 14, with the goal of completing it before March 1.
