Students from the Rural Teachers’ College of Atequiza, Jalisco, took two of three buses carrying 70 migrants from Mexico City to Guadalajara, which caused a strong police mobilization.

Around 30 students forced the buses to stop when they were passing through the municipality of Atequiza and got on them; the idea was to take them to use during upcoming protests over the costs of federal public transportation, but they did not know that the vehicles were being used by the National Institute of Migration to transport a group of migrants who had been granted work visas.

Upon receiving the report of what had happened, a group of state police began a chase to recover the buses and managed to intercept them with the support of the National Guard at the intersection of Lázaro Cárdenas and Colón avenues, in Guadalajara; meanwhile, another group of police forcibly entered the facilities of the Teachers’ College to take some students.

Through social media, students reported that the police committed abuses during the raid on the campus, such as hitting and insulting some of the students in the dormitories and even stealing some of their belongings.

It was reported that the migrants who traveled on the buses come from Honduras, El Salvador, Cuba and Brazil and stayed in a hotel in the city while they return to work.

So far, the authorities have not reported whether there are any students detained for these events and what their situation is.
