Around 200 people have filed complaints with the Attorney General’s Office of the State of Querétaro for alleged fraud related to the Caja Popular located in the municipality of Huimilpan, revealed the Undersecretary of Political and Social Development, Eric Gudiño.
The complainants claim that their savings have been retained by this institution, which has generated a series of concerns in the community.
The state official explained that, although the state government has provided support and advice to those affected, the issue is related to a legal matter of a federal nature.
“We have provided all the information and part of the testimonies of the complainants. However, it is an issue that must be addressed by the federal authorities, especially the National Banking and Securities Commission (CNBV), which is in charge of regulating this type of institution,” he indicated.
According to the Undersecretary, the complaints have been filed individually, but the state government has been supporting those affected to the extent of its powers; In addition, Gudiño stressed that the state administration has already notified the CNBV about this case and requested its intervention.
“Hopefully the federal government will also act and help these people, as we have been doing,” he added.
He said that the case has its origin in 2020, when the first reports of problems with the Caja Popular began to emerge and has remained ongoing to date. “More than 200 people have been affected, many of them with significant amounts, since some of those affected have invested their savings and pensions in this fund,” said the official.
Although the exact amount of the savings withheld has not been specified, Gudiño emphasized that most of those affected are older people, which further aggravates the situation.
“It is important that the CNBV pay attention to this type of institution, since they are responsible for granting permits and regulating the activities of these savings banks. They must ensure that no permits are given to any legal entity that wants to operate in this way,” he said.
The state government has expressed its willingness to continue supporting the victims of this alleged fraud and has organized meetings with those affected to provide them with additional guidance and advice.
“Next week we have more meetings scheduled to help those affected, and we will continue to request additional information from the CNBV on what they are doing about it,” Gudiño concluded.
