End advertising calls and messages: Profeco reveals how to avoid them “quickly and easily”

4

Many times, advertising calls and promotional messages can be a nuisance. To avoid this situation, the Federal Consumer Protection Agency (Profeco) offers a mechanism that allows you to block this type of communication.

Since its implementation, many people have opted for this alternative to avoid unwanted contact from companies in different sectors. With a simple and free registration, this tool allows users to reduce the reception of messages and calls for commercial purposes.

How to stop receiving advertising calls, according to Profeco?

The Public Registry to Avoid Advertising (Repep) is the system enabled by Profeco to stop the reception of promotions. To register, you must perform one of the following steps:

Dial from the phone you wish to register. In Mexico City, Guadalajara and Monterrey, the number is 9628 0000; in the rest of the country, 01 800 962 8000.

Access the official Profeco page and complete the registration form.

Call the Consumer Hotline at 5568 8722 in Mexico City and the metropolitan area or 01 800 468 8722 in other regions.
Once the number is registered, companies have a period of 30 days to remove it from their databases and stop advertising calls. This includes telecommunications, commerce and tourism promotions.

Registering with Repep does not block all telephone contacts. Collection calls, surveys, political or charitable organizations will continue to be made, since they do not fall within the regulations of the government entity.

To stop promotions from financial entities such as banks, insurance companies or Afores, it is necessary to register in the Public Registry of Users (REUS) of the National Commission for the Protection and Defense of Users of Financial Services (Condusef).

What to do if advertising calls persist?

If companies continue to send messages or make calls after registering with Repep, it is possible to file a complaint with Profeco. To do so, you must provide:

Name of the responsible company.
Telephone number or email of the consumer.
Telephone number of the company (optional) or evidence of the advertising received.
Date and time of the call or message, as well as the service or product promoted.
Since its creation in 2007, Repep has registered more than 376 thousand numbers and received thousands of complaints. In 2015, a significant increase in the number of registrations and complaints was reported, mainly in the telecommunications, commerce and tourism sectors.
