Mexican authorities arrested the leader of a criminal organization that operates in the border region with the United States and who is wanted by that country, the Ministry of Security reported on Friday (02/14/2025).

Local media identified the detainee as Humberto Rivera, alias El Chato, El don or El viejón, leader of the criminal group Gente Nueva, which operates in the northern state of Chihuahua associated with the powerful Sinaloa Cartel, which Washington points to as one of the largest traffickers of the lethal fentanyl.

“The detainee Humberto ‘N’ is the leader of a criminal organization that operates in the northern part of the country. In addition to being a priority target of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) of the United States,” the Ministry of Security said in a statement.

A review of the FBI website did not show Humberto Rivera on the list of the most wanted fugitives by said agency.

Arrest occurred in Ciudad Juárez

The arrest took place on Thursday night, according to local press, in Ciudad Juárez, when the individual was driving a vehicle at excessive speed, so security elements ordered him to stop “due to the possibility of a criminal act,” the bulletin details.

“The agents observed inside the vehicle packages with synthetic drugs, so they immediately carried out an inspection of the unit. Therefore, the man was arrested,” the secretariat added.

The Sinaloa Cartel is one of the mafias that, according to the newspaper The New York Times, will be designated as a terrorist organization after an executive order from US President Donald Trump.

According to the newspaper, the Jalisco Nueva Generación, the Northeast, La Familia Michoacana and Cárteles Unidos cartels would be the other Mexican criminal groups classified as terrorists.

Trump is demanding that Mexico and Canada, his neighbors and partners in the T-MEC free trade agreement, stop drug trafficking and undocumented migrants into their territory.

Mexico agreed to deploy 10,000 soldiers on the border with the United States and, at the same time, is calling on Washington to stop the flow of weapons that feed the cartels.
