The odyssey of a couple from Cordoba in Mexico: they claim they were mistreated at the Cancun airport

Francisco and Flavia, a couple from Córdoba, lived a nightmare when trying to enter Mexico to enjoy a vacation. Despite having round-trip tickets, hotel reservations, and enough money for their stay, they were detained by immigration and deported, according to them, without convincing explanations.

The incident occurred on February 8 at the Cancun airport. “We want to tell what happened to us to get rid of the anguish and the feeling of injustice,” Francisco recounted in a TikTok video that has already surpassed one million views.

The trip was going normally until the couple arrived at immigration. “We noticed that several passengers on our flight were asked many questions,” Francisco said.

When they presented their passports, the immigration police asked them for tickets, hotel reservations, and information on how much money they were carrying. The couple showed that they had $2,000 in cash and two credit cards, in addition to presenting the paid reservations in Cancun and Isla Mujeres. However, the stay in Playa del Carmen – another of the destinations chosen to stay for a few days – was not yet paid for: they planned to do it there because it would be cheaper that way.

The officer gave them 15 minutes to book another hotel and present the receipt. “I tried to do it from my cell phone, but the signal was terrible and the payment option did not appear,” Francisco explained. When he informed the agent of this, the situation became hostile: “They took us to an interrogation room, where there were people crying and screaming.”

The tension increased when Flavia, five months pregnant, was also interrogated. “Here, we are the ones who handle this, not you,” the agent told them. Then, their cell phones and passports were confiscated. “If you talk again, we will call Interpol,” they were threatened.

The couple was taken to a detention room, where there were about 40 people in precarious conditions. “They gave us a sandwich, a soda and we covered ourselves with aluminum foil on some mats. Flavia is pregnant. And we had no possibility of communicating,” Francisco said.

After six hours of waiting, they were escorted to a return flight. “They sent us to Lima, where we were stranded for 15 hours without cell phones or passports. There they treated us better and told us that this is happening often in Cancun.”

In addition, Francisco and Flavia denounced the loss of money for reservations and the mistreatment received. “Many say that you have to bring everything printed and paid for, but even then there is no guarantee of entry,” they concluded. Their testimony was added to that of other travelers who have already reported similar situations at the Cancun airport.
