Thousands of Mexican National Guards have established checkpoints along the U.S.-Mexico border, leading to mixed reactions from travelers.
In response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s agreement to pause tariffs on Mexico, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has fulfilled her promise to send guardsmen to reinforce the border and combat fentanyl smuggling.
On the morning of February 18, National Guards were seen inspecting several cars and trucks on the Mexican side of the International Bridge before they crossed into Laredo.
Drivers report that the inspections can take several minutes, resulting in delays of two to three hours. Travelers crossing from Nuevo Laredo to Laredo have expressed mixed feelings about the inspections. Additionally, drivers from other border cities, such as Reynosa, claim the inspections have caused delays of up to four to six hours.
