Following the operations that were deployed in Culiacán, Sinaloa, on the afternoon of February 19, it was revealed that Iván Archivaldo Guzmán (one of the Mexican drug traffickers most wanted by the United States) had escaped through a tunnel.

Military operations were carried out yesterday in Sinaloa territory. During these actions, four subjects linked to Los Chapitos, the faction of the Sinaloa Cartel led by Iván Archivaldo (son of drug lord Joaquín ‘El Chapo’ Guzmán) were arrested.

According to official reports, those arrested are José Ángel Canobbio Inzunza (El Güerito), Kevin Alonso Gil Acosta (El 200), José Alonso Acosta López (El Gusi) and Gustavo Acosta López.

José Alonso and Gustavo were identified as El 200’s uncle, who authorities have identified as the “person responsible for the security” of Iván Archivaldo. El Güerito, for his part, is considered to be the financial operator of Los Chapitos and the mastermind behind fentanyl trafficking.

After their arrests, the air and land operations — carried out by the Mexican Army and the National Guard — continued in Culiacán. This is because, supposedly, the authorities were looking for Iván Archivaldo, who had escaped through a tunnel.

In an interview with Azucena Uresti, journalist José Luis Montenegro said that El Chapo’s son was in a house located in the Tierra Blanca neighborhood. The property, according to reports, had a tunnel through which he managed to escape from the operation.

“Iván Archivaldo Guzmán Salazar was in that house, according to contacts I have within this organization. He would have escaped through a tunnel like his father did and thus avoid being captured by the Mexican authorities,” Montenegro commented.

The journalist specializing in drug trafficking issues detailed that the leader of Los Chapitos was in the company of Eric Bastidas, alias “El 09,” whom he identified as “one of his closest men.” Despite having escaped, Iván Archivado would have been injured (it is unknown if by gunshot wounds, although the authorities’ reports do not mention clashes during the operations).

“He is injured along with his escort, the closest one (…) That is why there were several helicopters flying over this northern area of Tierra Blanca in Culiacán at night,” he added. According to Montenegro, Iván would be in a “nervous crisis” due to the pressure exerted by the United States to dismantle the factions of the Sinaloa Cartel.

Similar information was released by the media Pie de Nota, directed by Luis Chaparro. According to this journalist, the authorities located Iván Archivaldo through José Ángel Canobbio.

“Sources within the Sinaloa Cartel organization itself, from one of the factions, told Pie de Nota that Canobbio had given the location of Iván Archivaldo yesterday, after his arrest, who was with El 200,” he reported.

According to Luis Chaparro, the house where Iván Archivaldo was supposedly located is in the Culiacancito area. “Upon hearing the helicopters, Iván Archivaldo would have escaped through a tunnel that connects to the city’s sewer system. El 200 and his two uncles would have stayed in that location,” he detailed.

As of the publication of this note, there are no official reports on the alleged escape of Iván Archivaldo. Despite this, the operations continue in Culiacán, which is why local authorities chose to cancel face-to-face classes for both shifts this Thursday.
