A display of the Putleco Carnival in the streets of downtown Oaxaca opened the season of carnivals celebrated by different communities in the state prior to the Lenten festivities.
The Tiliches, characters with traditional clothing from the valley of Putla Villa de Guerrero, from the Mixteca region of Oaxaca, walked along the tourist walkway from the Santo Domingo temple, accompanied by music and dance.
The reappearance of “Mazapán” stood out in this display, a dog that gained notoriety for accompanying the calendas during the Guelaguetza celebrations.
According to the state government, the carnivals mark the moment of “saying goodbye to demons and saying goodbye to meat during the liturgical period.”
The Putleco Carnival is celebrated from March 1 to 4 in the municipality of Putla Villa de Guerrero.
Other seasonal carnivals in Oaxaca
While the Puerto Escondido Carnival will take place from February 28 to March 2, where a hotel occupancy of 67 percent and an economic spill of almost 38 million pesos are expected, as well as the arrival of around 15 thousand visitors.
In this carnival season, other activities were also announced such as the Seventh Mezcal Curing, Gastronomic and Artisanal Fair in San Andrés Zautla, Etla.
In addition, the fifth edition of the San Agus Fest 2025 is expected to take place from February 28 to March 2 in San Agustinillo, located in the municipality of Santa María Tonameca.
