Thousands of Venezuelans in southern Mexico, where they make up a quarter of irregular migrants, are seeking to have the Mexican government include them in the ‘Humanitarian Flights’ to return to their country in the face of restrictions imposed by the President of the United States, Donald Trump.
South Americans have been lining up since this week in Tuxtla Gutiérrez, capital of Chiapas, a state bordering Central America, to benefit from the program enabled by the National Institute of Migration (INM) for Venezuelans who want to voluntarily return to their nation, as EFE found on the ground.
Even so, Venezuelans interviewed expressed their frustration at the slowness of the procedures they need to return after Trump’s measures, such as mass deportations, the “closure” of the border, and the end of the ‘CBP One’ application of the Customs and Protection Office to request asylum from southern Mexico.
The immigration station ‘Sub Representación Federal Zona Centro’ on the road to Villaflores has been the concentration point for thousands waiting their turn, although in the first two weeks of operation only a hundred migrants have managed to enter this program and return to Venezuela.
Although President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo has promised opportunities for foreigners, Darwin González, one of the first to complete the process, told EFE that he wants to return to Venezuela because of the working conditions in Mexico, where he receives low wages and cannot send money to his children.
“One could be here, but I do not have the capacity to send (money) to my children so they do not suffer hardship,” he explained.
