Airbnb has announced that it has paid over 1 billion pesos in lodging tax (ISH) to the Ministry of Finance and Planning of Quintana Roo from 2017 to 2024, on behalf of its hosts.
“The ISH is a local tax applicable to lodging services in federal entities,” the platform stated. Airbnb emphasized its commitment to tax compliance in accordance with each state’s legislation, with Quintana Roo being a significant region for this resource.
“It is an honor for Airbnb to present these figures, which demonstrate our commitment to the responsible and sustainable development of tourism in the country,” said Ángel Terral, Airbnb’s general director for Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean. “Taxes are a vital source of resources for government functions aimed at guaranteeing the rights and development of their populations.”
Terral highlighted the platform’s collaboration with the host community in states like Quintana Roo to ensure tax compliance.
Economic Impact of Airbnb
Recent announcements indicate that Airbnb guests generate an annual economic impact of 15 billion pesos for micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MiPyMEs), similar to the restaurant sector’s impact.
“According to a study, the activity generated by Airbnb supported the creation or maintenance of over 60,000 jobs,” said Jorge Balderrama, director of public policies for Airbnb in Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean. He noted that digital hosting platforms significantly boost SME turnover, enhancing profitability and job stability in the tertiary sector.
