Price Hikes in Basic Products Strain Budgets

Inflation in Yucatan increased in the first half of February 2025, according to the National Consumer Price Index (INPC) released by the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi). This rise in essential products, such as eggs and beef, poses a significant challenge for families in the Yucatan Peninsula, where food expenses play a crucial role in household budgets.

Key Price Increases

The products that saw the most significant price hikes in the first half of February include:

– Eggs: +5.28%

– Lunchrooms, restaurants, and taco stands: +0.50%

– Beef: +1.11%

– Own housing: +0.18%

– Electricity: +0.61%

While these increases strain consumer budgets, the fall in prices of some agricultural products offers a partial reprieve. Notably, the costs of tomatoes (-18.53%), onions (-7.81%), cactus (-10.66%), and low-octane gasoline (-0.18%) decreased.

On a national level, annual inflation stood at 3.74%, with a 0.15% increase in the first half of the month. Inflation is expected to remain stable in the coming weeks, although external factors like weather and logistics costs could influence future price fluctuations.
