The mayor, Dr. Oscar Eduardo Castro Castro, reached a binational agreement that will allow the extension of operating hours at the Lukeville Port of Entry, according to the Puerto Peñasco City Council. This progress was achieved after a series of negotiations with U.S. authorities and the National Guard in Sonora, seeking to expedite border flow without compromising security.

During a meeting with the media, the mayor explained that the Sonora National Guard agreed to relax the inspection measures at the entrance and exit of Lukeville, adjusting to the inspection pace of the United States. This will avoid congestion on the Mexican side and improve the experience of travelers. Castro Castro reiterated that the intensity of the inspections responds to requests from the U.S. government and has had a positive impact in the fight against illicit trafficking.

In addition, the mayor stressed that the agreement with the National Guard and the U.S. authorities will also guarantee fluid access to Puerto Peñasco during the high tourist season. With Spring Break just around the corner, it was confirmed that the border gates will remain open as long as there is a buildup of vehicles, both from Mexico to the United States and in the opposite direction.

This commitment was supported by the CBP, which will ensure smooth transit for visitors. In terms of security, Castro Castro assured that Puerto Peñasco maintains a zero incidence rate for high-impact crimes and that tourists will be able to enjoy a safe destination. A safe corridor has been implemented with support vehicles for the protection of visitors, in addition to ease of entry and exit from the country. “We can guarantee them a pleasant stay,” said the mayor, showing optimism at the start of the tourist season.
