Durango could have the largest solar farm in the country

Staff from the Federal Government’s Energy Secretariat will be in Durango to, together with the state government, analyze the ideal location for the installation of the largest solar farm in the country, as announced by the state governor, Esteban Villegas Villarreal.

It was during the recent visit made by the President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, to the state, when during the road trip she realized that in the state there is a significant uninterrupted territorial extension, which could be used in the construction of solar energy, taking advantage of the location that Durango has for the generation of the same.

He reported that a multidisciplinary group will be formed that will be made up of experts in the subject from both the federal and state governments; with the purpose of finding the ideal place where there is greater radiation, “we already have a map to see if we can achieve that this largest solar park in Mexico can be built here in Durango,” he commented.

There are two areas that the President of Mexico saw as positive for the construction of said solar park, one is located in the municipality of Durango, on the highway that leads to the municipality of Guadalupe Victoria “everything that is after the airport, there is a great opportunity”; as well as the one that is located in the municipality of Tlahualilo.

These are lands that at first glance look flat, and with all the ideal characteristics for the construction of a solar farm, however the governor explained that it is a wetland area, and there are even some specific places where it is not possible to build, although the installation of a solar park could work.

“I hope that this week the multidisciplinary group for this project will be there,” said the governor of Durango, detailing that if approved, the project could begin its construction this year, since the state enters two of the poles of well-being, that of renewable energies and agroindustry, which were announced in the work plan of Dr. Claudia Sheinbaum as part of her government strategy.

It should be noted that during the administration of José Aispuro Torres, the construction of a 117 MW photovoltaic solar farm was launched in the J. Guadalupe Aguilera ejido, in the municipality of Canatlán, a project that was in the making since 2015, with an investment of 120 million dollars.

However, a few months after the end of the last state government, said farm had not come into operation, since they were waiting for authorization from the Energy Regulatory Commission, since the arrival of the Covid-19 pandemic delayed all the procedures.

However, it was not until 2023, when Esteban Villegas Villarreal, at the head of the State Government, unblocked the project, since among the complications that arose were the demands of the ejidatarios of the area, who argued the failure to repair the environmental impact derived from the installation.
