The weekend before the beginning of Lent, the main garden of San Miguel de Allende is transformed into a scene full of colors and joy. Locals and visitors, both children and adults, eagerly await the arrival of the holiday that is celebrated with shells filled with confetti.
Today, children and adults enjoy the bustling carnival in San Miguel de Allende, where confetti shells are the stars of the celebration.
A festive hustle and bustle is generated around the kiosk in the garden. The participants, armed with bags full of shells, enjoy the “combat” where the objective is to smash the shells on the heads of any passerby and quickly flee to avoid revenge. Those who walk near the kiosk are exposed to being covered in confetti, since the simple act of walking through the garden can make them part of the game.
Along the streets near the portals, vendors sell bags of cascarones at affordable prices, starting at 10 pesos. They also sell handmade figures made with cascarones, such as paper flowers and clowns, which have become popular souvenirs.
This carnival, which peaks during the weekend before Ash Wednesday, continues its celebration through Monday and Tuesday. However, it is on Saturday and Sunday when the main garden of San Miguel fills with the greatest number of people, celebrating with shells the last feast before the beginning of Lent.
