Unpaid Wages: Tulum Restaurant Workers Speak Out

Former employees of a coastal restaurant in Tulum are speaking out about unpaid wages, warning other workers about businessmen allegedly neglecting their labor obligations. The establishment, previously operating under brands such as Lemba, La Sundanguera, IT, and Zamna on the Beach, is now facing allegations from its former staff.

One of the complainants, who served as a floor manager, shared that he was hired in early December and worked until January 26. At that point, he was informed that the restaurant would no longer operate under the IT brand, and its reopening was postponed. However, he did not receive any salary during this period.

“They kept giving us the runaround during December and January. I was not paid for any of those months,” said the affected worker, pointing to Ian Goldberg, owner of Mundo Maya and Alto Fuego, as one of the responsible parties for the restaurant’s administration.

According to his testimony, the restaurant owes him 30,000 pesos. He also mentioned that other employees are in the same situation but prefer not to speak out publicly for fear of reprisals.

This case has raised concern among workers in the restaurant sector, who worry that similar issues may arise in other businesses. As of now, the accused businessmen have not issued an official statement. Meanwhile, the affected employees are exploring legal options to claim their owed wages.
