It is becoming more common for people to be diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder, a condition that manifests itself in a very characteristic way and is detected mainly when children are between 2 and 3 years old.
Characteristic behaviors of Autism Spectrum Disorder
- Social isolation
- Motor disorders / Stereotyped movements
- Language disorders
Although the detection of autism has evolved, in Veracruz the exact number of people with this condition is unknown due to the lack of a census, an issue that has been exposed by civil associations and experts for several years.
In Mexico, one in every 115 children has Autism Spectrum Disorder.
It is estimated that in Veracruz there are more than 27 thousand people with this condition.
Of these, 2,334 are children enrolled in federal and state schools, although approximately half are not diagnosed.
Due to the emergence of this and other neurological disorders, institutions such as the Veracruz Children’s Rehabilitation Center (CRIVER) have expanded their services to serve the population that suffers from it.
It is in these same institutions where it is confirmed that it is an increasingly frequent condition that, in addition to visibility, requires infrastructure and resources for a timely diagnosis.
