CHIAPAS HAS A STRATEGIC POTENTIAL WITH GEOTHERMAL ENERGY

With the vision of transforming the natural potential of Chiapas into a development engine, Senator Luis Armando Melgar, president of the Senate Housing Commission, highlighted the importance of the geothermal reform, which will allow states with great energy resources, such as Chiapas, to position themselves as leaders in the transition towards clean and renewable energy.

Melgar stressed that geothermal energy, which takes advantage of the heat from the Earth’s interior to generate electricity, hot water or heating, is a sustainable and low-cost source that should be promoted on the country’s southern border. In this context, Chiapas has key areas, such as the Chichonal and Tacaná volcanoes, identified by the Ministry of Energy as strategic areas for geothermal development in Mexico.

“With the recently approved energy reform, it is important to highlight the geothermal potential of Chiapas as a strategic step to take advantage of our natural resources without affecting the environment. We have the capacity to produce clean and accessible energy that benefits all the people of Chiapas. “Chiapas has what it takes!” said the legislator.

The initiative sets out clear conditions for the efficient exploration and exploitation of geothermal energy, allowing investment in infrastructure to boost the economic development of the region. In addition, it seeks to ensure that the energy generated in Chiapas directly benefits its inhabitants, with fairer and more accessible rates.

“Historically, Chiapas has been a key generator of energy in Mexico, but the benefits have not always reached our people. With this reform, we ensure that the use of geothermal energy translates into a better quality of life, jobs and sustainable development. We cannot continue to depend on expensive energy when in Chiapas we have an inexhaustible source of clean energy,” emphasized Melgar.

The senator explained that this reform will not only diversify the country’s energy matrix, but will also open opportunities for new investment projects in Chiapas, promoting the creation of jobs and strengthening the state’s energy autonomy.

Melgar reiterated his commitment to continue working from the Senate so that this reform generates real benefits for the people of Chiapas, ensuring that the state’s energy potential is used responsibly and with social justice, in alignment with Governor Eduardo Ramírez’s sustainable development plan.

“This is a firm step towards a more prosperous and sustainable Chiapas. We cannot continue to let opportunities pass us by while other states advance in the energy transition. With this reform we guarantee a development model in which geothermal energy is a pillar of growth for our state. In the New ERA of Chiapas we are moving forward with a firm step towards a more just and sustainable future,” concluded the senator.
