The president of the Business Coordinating Council (CCE), Edi Alberto Martínez Tejeda, described the entry into force of the tariffs imposed by the president of the United States, Donald Trump, as an attack on Mexico, after resuming the threat of tariffs against its neighboring countries and partners in the T-MEC trade agreement.
Impacts of the imposition of tariffs in Mexico
The businessman pointed out that this measure will significantly affect the economy of the final consumer, especially in a context in which the country’s economy is already contracted. The imposition of additional tariffs could increase production costs and, consequently, the prices of final products.
“There are many investments that are surely stopped at this time, as well as many orders, especially those related to our country’s exports to the United States, which are on hold due to uncertainty. This has contracted the economy a bit,” explained Martínez Tejeda.
Given this situation, the president of the CCE suggested that it is necessary to look at thriving economies such as India and China to establish synergies with them since they represent large and rapidly growing markets, which have a significant industrial capacity and an advanced technological base.
“I think that the business sector has learned a lot today. We have to continue learning from these situations and we will move forward,” he added.
The president of the CCE Veracruz – Boca del Río acknowledged that there is concern among the private sector after the entry into force of the tariffs announced by the Donald Trump government. However, the private sector will wait for President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo to announce her Plan B next Sunday.
President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo will hold an informative meeting next Sunday, March 9 at 12 noon
It should be noted that Sheinbaum Pardo announced on Tuesday morning that Mexico is preparing tariff and non-tariff measures in response to those announced the previous day by her counterpart, Donald Trump, against Mexico and Canada.
Since the president assured that the imposition of tariffs lacks justification and violates the trade agreements established in the T-MEC, next Sunday, March 9, she will announce the strategy that her government will implement in the Zócalo of Mexico City.
Martínez Tejeda expressed her hope that Mexico will not suffer an economic recession. However, regardless of the positions of the Mexican government, strategies will have to be implemented to deal with the situation.
