During the early hours of this Saturday, a municipal police officer from Fortín de las Flores, Veracruz, shot and killed a 19-year-old man after a police check.
The victim, identified as Pablo Ortigoza Martínez, was an amateur boxer and university student.
His body was found lying 100 meters from his house in the Ricardo Ballinas neighborhood. There are two versions of what happened about the crime. One says there was an argument and the officer shot him; another says that Pablo tried to get away out of fear, which caused the attack.
The officer involved was arrested and placed at the disposal of the authorities.
Pablo’s murder has generated outrage in the community and on social media, where friends and acquaintances have shared messages in his memory and demanded justice.
His colleagues at the Cazadores Olympic boxing gym, where Pablo trained, called on the community of young boxers to attend the funeral mass this Saturday, March 1, wearing their sports uniforms, gloves, bandages or any clothing in his honor.
“The reason is to peacefully raise our voices for the brutal murder of a talented, hard-working and studious young man, who lost his life arbitrarily at the hands of those who should protect us.”
Ilse, a friend of the young man, wrote on social media: “My high school and university friend, classmate. Even on Wednesday he helped me study for my exam. Justice for Pablo. Someone so full of dreams, goals, objectives, with so much life ahead of him that someone would come to take it away from him. Pablo was always someone full of energy, happiness, someone who whenever you greeted him, he would give you a big smile, someone who made you laugh and with his presence put you in a good mood.”
