Querétaro warns of job losses due to Trump tariffs: Asks the government for loans for SMEs

Querétaro Governor Mauricio Kuri said Tuesday that the tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump on Mexico could affect job creation in his state and asked the federal government to grant loans to medium and small businesses.

In a radio interview, the governor said that job losses would be one of the main consequences of the 25 percent tariffs on exports from Mexico to the United States.

Support for companies in the face of Trump’s tariffs on Mexico
Given this scenario, Governor Kuri said that the state and federal governments should think of ways to restore employment.

“The economy was already going down and we lost 400 thousand jobs that should have been created between 2000 and 2024, but they were lost. So, I think we should be thinking about how we are going to do it to be able to restore employment and formal employment,” he said.

He said that the ultimate way to reduce poverty is through formally established companies, so he asked that businessmen in the country continue to be supported.

“There must be support, from my point of view, from the federal side to have quick, easy microcredits and credits for micro and medium-sized companies. This is what I believe must be done,” said the governor of Querétaro.

He warned that with the implementation of tariffs in Mexico, job creation may be affected, specifically in Querétaro, where there are several production plants.

“I am concerned that job creation will not go at the same pace as we had. Job creation, which was around 35 or 36 thousand, last year fell by 11 thousand. There are many companies on the way that are already investing in Querétaro and that will keep us at least in the black in terms of employment,” he said in an interview.

The governor indicated that he foresees that at the national level there may be a more serious problem in job loss.

Will factories in Querétaro leave the state due to Trump’s tariffs?
The governor of Querétaro, Mauricio Kuri, ruled out that manufacturing companies that are in the state will leave the country due to the tariffs imposed by Donald Trump and that came into effect on March 4.

“I do not see it possible that in the short term they can change the production lines from one day to the next. If anyone knows, it is President Trump, who is a businessman. For pure logistics reasons, right? I mean, the money it costs you, training people, I mean, you can’t do it from one day to the next, it seems totally illogical to me,” he said.

Mauricio Kuri assured that President Trump is a businessman “who only wants to win.”

Donald Trump announced the entry into force of the imposition of tariffs on Mexico and Canada as of this Tuesday, March 4. The move is a blow to the US’s two largest trading partners.

“There is no room for Mexico or Canada,” Trump told reporters when asked if the two countries could reach an agreement to pause tariffs, as happened last February. “Everything is ready. They go into effect tomorrow,” Trump reiterated.
