What to do in Zihuatanejo
Zihuatanejo is another of the Magical Towns of Guerrero, a charming and quiet fishing village ideal for a quick getaway. It is a destination for those seeking relaxation and silence, with activities to connect with the nature that surrounds the place. Among the activities you can do here, we recommend:
Walk through the streets of Zihuatanejo. If you like to start your mornings early, you can go to the main beach where you will see the fishermen who come to sell what they caught in the sea hours before. Afterwards you can continue your walk along the Paseo del Pescador, where there are various shops and cafes to start your morning.
Visit the Archaeological Museum of the Costa Grande. If you like history, here you will find six rooms where pre-Hispanic pieces from different cultures such as the Olmec, Teotihuacan, Tarascan and Mexica are exhibited. This museum shows the main historical events of the Costa Grande, from the port of Acapulco to the mouth of the Balsas River.
Cycle along the bike path. To continue your discovery, you can cycle along the bike path that runs from Zihuatanejo to Ixtapa. The journey is a delight, taking place between estuaries, trees, viewing points, and birds of all kinds, such as parakeets, herons, cardinals, larks, and parrots. On this almost 4 km stretch, you can encounter local fauna, such as iguanas, ferrets, raccoons, and armadillos.
Discover the Magical Town of Ixcateopan de Cuauhtémoc
The newest Magical Town in Guerrero is Ixcateopan de Cuauhtémoc, a town in the northern region of the state. In the heart of this quiet destination stands the Parish of the Assumption of Mary, a 16th century colonial temple. Its golden altarpieces and religious works of art are part of its attractions, but the biggest surprise will be to know that this temple also serves as a museum. General information about the Mexica and Aztec culture is exhibited here, and it is said that the last Aztec tlatoani rests in the Parish of the Assumption of Mary.
According to tradition, Cuauhtémoc was captured here and, after being executed by the forces of Hernán Cortés in 1525, his remains were buried here. Today, they rest in a chapel in the temple, being one of the greatest historical treasures of the town.
At the end of the town is the archaeological zone of Ixcateopan, which despite being small, retains great importance and in the environment you can feel the magic and tranquility of the place.
