On the afternoon of March 4, the Chamber of Deputies approved the reforms that go against the prohibition of consecutive reelection and electoral nepotism, which would come into force in 2030 and not in 2027, as originally proposed by the president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum.
The legislators approved the proposals in general and in particular, with which the Board of Directors of San Lázaro sent them to each local Congress for ratification.
In this sense, it was revealed that Tamaulipas was the first state in Mexico to accept the reforms that imply the modifications to articles 115, 116 and 122 of the Political Constitution of the United Mexican States.

Only 29 legislators attended the extraordinary meeting… According to reports, Vicente Verástegui explained the absence of the rest, who “got tired and left the Plenary” because of a previous session.
It is required that at least 17 local Congresses, out of 32, approve the reforms.
The proposals of the head of the Executive foresee the modification of articles 55, 59, 82, 115, 116 and 122 of the Political Constitution of the United Mexican States, in addition to articles 86 and 89 of the Organic Law of the General Congress of the United Mexican States; and 183, numeral 2 and 187, of the Regulations of the Senate of the Republic.
→ Reform against nepotism
According to the provisions of the draft opinion, it was instructed that no person who has or has had in the last three years prior to the day of the election a marriage, concubinage, relationship as a couple or kinship by blood or civil in a straight line without limitation of degree and in a collateral line up to the fourth degree or affinity up to the second degree with the person who holds the title of any of the aforementioned positions may be a deputy, senator, President of the Republic, governor, local deputy, municipal president, head of government or mayor.
As a justification, it was emphasized that this initiative will promote the democratic system and avoid situations of inequality, since certain family privileges in politics will be discarded.
→ Reform against reelection
It was stated that reelection sought to improve accountability and government efficiency, however, in practice, only political groups that use their influence to stay in power, “without respecting the will of the people” have been strengthened.
They also pointed out that re-election seeks disproportionate advantages over new candidates, directly undermining the principle of fairness in the electoral contest.
