The criminal map in Mexico continues to be reconfigured. After the delivery to the United States of 29 high-profile drug traffickers who were held in various penitentiary centers, the panorama in the country has changed significantly, although violence and insecurity continue without any variation.
Although the country of the stars and stripes now has under its protection bosses such as Rafael Caro Quintero, co-founder of the Guadalajara Cartel; Ismael Zambada García and Joaquín ‘El Chapo’ Guzmán; co-founders of the Sinaloa Cartel; Rubén Oseguera González, son of the leader of the Jalisco Nueva Generación Cartel (CJNG); and even Joaquín and Ovidio Guzmán López, of Los Chapitos, the authorities continue to seek to bring other drug trafficking leaders to justice in the United States.
Most of them are people at the head of the Sinaloa Cartel, although the cartel of the four letters and the Familia Michoacana also stand out. Here we tell you who they are.
The Chapitos
Although the US maintains legal proceedings against several members of the most notorious faction of the also known Pacific Cartel, the authorities of that country seek to stop the activities of Iván Archivaldo and Jesús Alfredo Guzmán Salazar; current leaders of the criminal group.
“(…) They share leadership roles in the Sinaloa Cartel and its fentanyl trafficking operations, including: the coordination of fentanyl trafficking to the US; the shipment of chemical precursors of fentanyl from China to Mexico; and the collection of drug profits for members and associates of the Sinaloa Cartel. They are also responsible for coordinating the trafficking of other controlled substances such as cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine and marijuana,” reads the search file of the US State Department.
The US is offering a reward of 10 million dollars for information leading to his arrest and/or conviction, respectively.
‘El Mayito Flaco’
In addition to Los Chapitos, the US government is seeking the downfall of Ismael Zambada Sicairos, alias ‘El Mayito Flaco’, who currently leads the faction that was headed by Ismael Zambada García.
According to the Department of Justice, Zambada Sicairos has an indictment against him for participating in a continuing criminal enterprise (CCE) and conspiracy to distribute and import cocaine, methamphetamine and marijuana to the US. The charges have been filed in the Federal Court of the Southern District of California since September 2013.

‘El Guano’
Another of the drug traffickers who heads the Sinaloa Cartel and has managed to evade authorities for years is Aureliano Guzmán Loera, brother of ‘El Chapo’ and uncle of Los Chapitos.
According to military reports extracted from Army servers by the Guacamaya Group, after the arrest of ‘El Chapo’, ‘El Guano’ decided to lead his own faction at the head of the criminal organization.
The government of the country of the stars and stripes has identified him as the person in charge of directing the operations of the Sinaloa Cartel in Sonora, specifically with regard to the transportation of drugs to the United States.
He is accused of being involved in the cultivation, production, manufacturing and trafficking of illicit substances such as poppy, marijuana, heroin, fentanyl, methamphetamine and cocaine; all of this acting on behalf of the Sinaloa Cartel.
The US offers a reward of 5 million dollars for information about him.
The Michoacana Family
Two other drug traffickers who remain at large and are responsible for much of the violence in the country are brothers Johnny and José Alfredo Hurtado Olascoaga, alias ‘El Pez’ and ‘El Fresa’, respectively; recognized in Mexico as leaders of the Michoacana Family.
Although the authorities of the country of the stars and stripes point to the Hurtado Olascoaga brothers as co-leaders of the Michoacana Family, only one of them has been formally charged in a district court: Johnny. The man, currently 52 years old, was indicted by a federal grand jury on June 24, 2000. He is wanted by the Southern District of Florida on two charges related to attempted possession and conspiracy to distribute cocaine.
But the story is different in Mexico. Currently, the Attorney General’s Office of the State of Mexico (FGJEM), the main entity in which they operate, is offering up to 500 thousand Mexican pesos for information leading to the capture of both.
One of the priority targets of the US who remains at large is Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, ‘El Mencho’, leader of the CJNG.
In April 2022, Oseguera was charged with participating in a continuing criminal enterprise; conspiracy to manufacture and distribute methamphetamine, cocaine, and fentanyl for importation into the United States; and use of a firearm during and in relation to drug trafficking crimes.
Currently, he is positioned as the Mexican drug trafficker for whom the northern neighboring country offers the most money.
The US State Department is promising a reward of 15 million dollars – just over 300 million Mexican pesos, according to the current exchange rate – to anyone who provides information about the founder of the four-letter cartel, whose whereabouts remain unknown.
