The San Cristóbal de Las Casas Lions Club and the Coordinator of the Spring and Peace Fair 2023 in its 153rd edition announced that registrations are open to participate in the Judas burning contest that takes place every year in the colonial city of San Cristóbal de Las Casas.
The 2023 Judas making and burning contest will take place on Saturday, April 8, 2023 in the city’s cathedral square, where the works made by artisans and artists from the region will be exhibited and rated by the judges. The technique used to make the Judas is traditional and is made with reeds and cardboard with paint and enamel finishes.
The theme of the contest is free, as long as it does not offend or harm the morals of third parties, and the originality and finish of the works to be entered will be rated. The works must have a minimum height of one meter and a maximum of 2.50 meters and a width of 1.50 meters, including bases and decorative elements. Materials that facilitate burning are allowed, such as clothing, plastic, metals, wood and skins, but not those with a high content of dangerous explosives.
The prizes for the winners will be: first place 19,000 pesos, second place 13,000 pesos and third place 8,000 pesos, respectively. Registration to participate in the contest is open and more information can be obtained at the facilities of the Lions Club or with the Fair committee.
Citizens are invited to witness the burning of the works next Holy Saturday and to enjoy the Spring and Peace Fair 2023 in its 153rd edition, which begins that same night. The organizers emphasize the importance of following the rules of the contest to avoid disqualifications and guarantee safety at the event.
