Femicide is the highest point of violence against women around the world; however, Mexico is one of the countries with high rates of murders in this sector of the population, without distinction of age, social class, race, religious beliefs, or sexual orientation.
According to the United Nations Organization (UN), femicide can be triggered by discrimination against women and girls, imbalances in power relations, stereotypes in gender roles or the existence of harmful social norms.
And it is the conclusion of a series of aggressions ranging from psychological to physical and sexual, which can occur in homes, workplaces, schools or public spaces.
In many cases, only gender-based murders committed by a partner or family member are considered femicides; However, these murders can occur in many contexts outside the private sphere, such as rape, female genital mutilation, hate crimes based on sexual orientation or gender identity, human trafficking, or being related to armed conflicts and organized crime.
Mexican government recorded 1.7 femicides per day in January
The Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System reported that last January 54 murders of women were classified as femicides in Mexico, that is, there was an average of 1.7 victims of this crime per day.
According to the Report on Violence against Women, which was published last February, this figure is lower compared to that recorded in January 2024, with a total of 64 femicides, of the 839 that were recorded throughout that same year.
The secretariat detailed that of the 54 femicides recorded in January 2025, 42 of the victims were adult women and 37% of the total cases were concentrated in four states:
State of Mexico, with seven cases (13%).

The number of femicides in January is added to the cases of murders of women classified as intentional homicide, with 187 victims; and negligent homicide, with 266 more.
When the figures for the three crimes are combined, the total is 507 women murdered during that same month, which represents 16.3 cases per day.
According to the same report, of the total number of intentional homicides, 84 cases (44.4%) were concentrated in four states: Guanajuato, with 31 victims; Baja California, with 22; Mexico, with 15; and Michoacán, with 15.
