Lady Gaga jokes that she is boring and “thanks God” for it, but she is not so with her art.

The singer says that she is now much healthier and is grateful to be with Michael Polansky, her fiancé, to whom she dedicates a song from her new album MAYHEM, which is released today.

The material —for which she composed around 50 songs— is her favorite album in a long time, she says in an interview, although she would not like to classify it with any specific sound as has happened on other occasions.

ARTPOP was a vibration. Joanne was a sound. Chromatica had a sound. The Fame Monster was more chaotic. The Fame was theatrical pop. Born This Way was more New York electro metal. I tried hard when making MAYHEM not to do that and not try to give my music a dress… but to let myself be influenced by everything. That was how I discovered my abilities as a composer and producer as a child, so it was a special experience.

However, some of that influence, the electro grunge influence, came through in other songs that were industrial, others were like 2000s throwbacks, like Garden of Eden. There’s a song called Can’t Stop the High that’s on the album version that’s only on my website and it’s a pure electro grunge record that goes even harder than Perfect Celebrity,” says the actress in a chat with Zane Lowe for Apple Music 1.

Lady Gaga burst onto the music scene in 2008 with her album The Fame, has sold more than 110 million records and has won 14 Grammy Awards.

When her career took off, she says, she no longer had the same feeling of home. Although she has an incredible family that she loves very much, she recognizes that she was far away, without ties and she enjoyed it for a long time.

Sometimes I joke and say ‘I’m boring now and I thank God.’ But seriously, maybe I’m not boring in my art, for sure. Boring maybe it was what I was doing before, where I was so predictably chaotic all the time.

I like being able to reflect on all my dreams and then do them, that’s why I say MAYHEM is also all these gothic dreams. It’s like all my dark dreams and all the different things they mean and how they come to life; everything is in one place and it’s total chaos, it’s completely me… it’s my gift to my fans,” she stresses.

Gaga has been loved by her Little Monsters, who have shown her love and fidelity over the years, but there was one piece that, according to her words, was missing: that of love
as a couple.

She met Michael Polansky before the pandemic and last year she confirmed that they were engaged. Even, in MAYHEM, the song Blade of Grass has a special dedication.

I am much healthier. I have good people in my life. I fell in love with Michael. As a songwriter, you need life to inspire what you write and if it’s all promotion, then I’ll write about promotion…

Michael asked me how I would like him to propose to me one day.

We were in our backyard and I said, ‘take a blade of grass and wrap it around my finger’ and then I wrote Blade of Grass. I remembered what his face looked like and the grass in the yard…

At one point I was into the idea of fame and the artifice of being the driver of your own life as far as your own internal sense of fame goes. I had to fight a lot harder to make music and dance a little bit later in my career because my life became so different, that I didn’t have as much life around me to inspire me. It all became this other thing and then I think my fans were like, ‘Why isn’t he promoting stuff?’ and ‘Where is he?’ but I needed to live life to have a full life and also give back my true gift.

That’s one of the sweetest things I think Michael ever said to me as my partner, it was something like, ‘You are who you are, you’re an artist. That’s what makes you the happiest, so we have to nurture that part of you. ’ It reminded me that the other things were maybe sometimes hard for me and made it harder, taking me away from what I love,” she explains to Zane Lowe for Apple Music 1 in New York’s Lower East Side.

Because of that, she finds performing while in love a much more fulfilling experience.

My home used to be just the stage. It was so lonely. And it’s also so much more fun to have someone up there with you, someone who loves you, who knows what you’re capable of in all the different aspects of life. I think there’s nothing that brings me to tears more on a daily basis than knowing that I mean so much to someone in a way that has nothing to do with what I do on stage or my song or what I’m wearing.

“It’s like he’s so grateful if I make him a double decaf espresso with ice because that’s his favorite, and that’s a big part of who I am. And to be important to someone just for being me, as a girl, that means a lot, but also to be held and for him to tell me what you have to do to get ready and go do that is so intense. He just wants me to be okay and he’s my real friend,” she says excitedly.

Born March 28, 1986, Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta recently told her Little Monsters that she loves being Lady Gaga because she has returned to her art in a huge way to make this album.

I put a lot of myself into it as a musician, a producer, a songwriter. And that’s what Lady Gaga is to me. Maybe to someone else it’s the meat dress or something that I’ve done that makes them remember her as me. But to me, I always want to be remembered for being a real artist and someone who cares a lot about an artistic life.”
