The Yucatán police have arrested Joan “S,” a Spanish national and cultural activist associated with Catalan culture, following accusations of assault and threats against Ruth, an employee at a Mérida café. The incident, which took place on February 26, involved acts of intimidation, damage to property, and verbal aggression. Authorities executed the arrest warrant at the suspect’s home, as confirmed by the state Prosecutor’s Office.

According to Ruth, Joan “S” entered the café visibly upset and demanded that the music volume be lowered, despite it not being excessively loud. He reportedly smashed a vase near her, blocked the exit, and issued threats, stating he would return armed if she spoke out. A customer intervened, stopping the attack, but the suspect allegedly dismissed his actions, saying, “Nothing happened here.”

Videos circulating online captured Joan’s threatening behavior, which was crucial for filing the formal complaint.

Joan Serra Montagut, known for his involvement in cultural and radio projects focusing on women and children, presented a stark contrast between his public persona and his recent actions. In another video related to the incident, he was seen verbally assaulting a woman attempting to film the confrontation, further raising concerns about his behavior.

Ruth and the café owners have filed a complaint for threats and property damage. Fearing for her safety, Ruth stated, “If something happens to me, it is their responsibility.” Despite offering apologies during his interaction with the authorities, Joan reportedly maintained a hostile attitude.

The case has garnered significant attention on social media, where users praised Ruth’s courage in speaking out. Many condemned Joan’s behavior, emphasizing the importance of holding individuals accountable, regardless of their social status or background.

The Yucatán Prosecutor’s Office confirmed that legal proceedings are underway. Community members have called for transparency and swift action, highlighting the need for this case to set a precedent against violence, particularly towards vulnerable individuals. Ruth expressed hope that her testimony would encourage others to report such incidents, stating, “Let this serve so no one else feels intimidated.”

As the investigation progresses, the resolution of this case will be critical in ensuring accountability and preventing future acts of violence.
