Cancún has become a hotspot for crocodile sightings, with authorities reporting an average of 15 incidents each year. The Benito Juárez Municipal Fire Department is often called upon to respond to these cases, which typically involve the animals emerging from the mangroves and entering the streets.
According to Aquileo Cervantes Álvarez, head of the department, most sightings occur in Colonia Lombardo Toledano and Corales, with fewer incidents reported on Malecón Tajamar. In fact, a recent video showed one of these animals being spotted in the area.
“We have approximately 12 or 15 cases of crocodile sightings each year in different areas, but mainly in Lombardo Toledano, Corales, and Malecón Tajamar,” Cervantes Álvarez explained.
While some residents may be alarmed by the presence of crocodiles, authorities assure that attacks on citizens have not occurred due to the animals’ natural fear. “The animals are more frightened than we are of them, so they move away from where people are,” the official stated.
In cases where crocodiles emerge onto the streets, the public is advised to call the emergency number immediately so that authorities can provide assistance. This may involve removing the animal from the area or directing it back to its habitat in the mangroves and lagoon.
Overall, authorities remain vigilant in responding to these incidents, ensuring the safety of both citizens and crocodiles in Cancún’s urban areas.
