On Wednesday, March 12, members and authorities from the Sonora State Security Board seized a greenhouse used for the cultivation of high-quality marijuana (cannabis) plants. According to information from the Fourth Military Region, the operation took place in the Seri indigenous community, located in the Punta Chueca area of the capital, Hermosillo.

These security and drug-fighting operations were led by members of the Mexican Army, the Attorney General’s Office (FGR), the National Guard (GN), and the Ministerial Criminal Investigation Agency (AMIC). They seized approximately 792 marijuana plants; of these, 219 were one meter tall, while the remaining 573 were of varying sizes, measuring approximately 20 centimeters.

In addition, the seizure of the following products and objects was also reported within these spaces:

All of these results, according to the State Security Roundtable, are part of the actions to strengthen the National Public Security Strategy, as well as the Plan to Reinforce the Security Strategy on the Northern Border.

Images of this joint operation in Sonora were shared on social media. They show two rooms with irrigation systems and adequate ventilation to keep the cannabis plants in perfect condition. In the center of these facilities, crops of thick stems and leafy leaves can be seen, which, as detailed, were used for the manufacture of synthetic marijuana.

So far, federal forces have announced that the seized materials will be taken by the state delegation of the Attorney General’s Office (FGR), as well as by the Sonora Attorney General’s Office (FGJS).

Army personnel also located and destroyed five marijuana plantations in another region of the state, according to the state Public Security Secretariat (SSP). The plantations were located by drones and even by an aircraft near the municipality of Álamos, very close to the border with Chihuahua.

According to the official report, security personnel detected more than 24,000 kilograms of this substance on the ground:

“At the site, five marijuana plantations containing approximately 24,688 kilograms of marijuana were destroyed. These plantations were located during the intervention by specialized State Police units on the border between the state and Chihuahua,” detailed the administration of Governor Alfonso Durazo.

The destruction was carried out with the aim of weakening the logistical and financial capabilities of criminal groups operating in the region. Although the criminal organization to which the marijuana plantations belonged was not identified, Sonora is a disputed area between different factions of organized crime, particularly groups linked to the Sinaloa Cartel and other cells operating independently in the border region.

The discovery adds to other recent operations in northwestern states, where the military and the National Guard have reported similar seizures and eradications. According to official figures, more than 80 marijuana plantations have been destroyed in various regions of the country during 2024.
