In a disturbing incident in the popular tourist destination of Tulum, Mexico, a group of Canadian tourists fell prey to an attempted scam by a local car rental company after they were involved in a motorcycle accident. Instead of receiving assistance and support, the foreigners were allegedly abandoned and victimized by the business owner’s attempts to overcharge them.
The incident occurred when the tourists, who did not speak Spanish, sought help from White Shark Luxury Services, the rental company that owned the vehicle involved in the accident. However, instead of offering a fair solution, Óscar, the company owner, demanded an exorbitant sum to cover the damage, far higher than the actual value of the motorcycle.
According to witnesses, Óscar arrived at the scene with no concern for the injured tourists and their well-being. His only interest was in negotiating directly with traffic officers to demand a higher payment for the damage. The tourists offered 15,000 pesos to cover the repair costs, but Óscar rejected their offer and demanded payment of the original price for the motorcycle as if it were new, despite its wear and tear and accumulated mileage.
The alleged attempted abuse became evident when traffic officers inspected the motorcycle and discovered it lacked proper documentation, leading to its impoundment and transfer to the municipal impound lot. Óscar was unable to carry out the scam and was left without any arguments before the authorities.
This case has sparked outrage in the local community, highlighting the poor practices of some car rental companies in Tulum. The tourists said that, in addition to being victims of an attempt to overcharge them, they received no support or advice in their language, leaving them vulnerable.
Tourists and residents have warned about the importance of verifying the legality and reputation of rental companies before hiring their services to avoid similar situations. Meanwhile, White Shark Luxury Services is at the center of controversy, facing serious questions about its business ethics and its alleged lack of responsibility toward its clients.
