The city of Cancun has lost 10 out of 11 flights from Colombia in recent weeks due to strict immigration enforcement actions. The remaining flight, operated by Wingo, is now at risk of being canceled. This decline has resulted in a significant loss for the city’s tourism industry.
Jesús Almaguer Salazar, president of the Cancun Hotel Association, expressed concerns about the impact on local businesses and the economy. He noted that each passenger from Colombia generates an average income of $450 per day, which is used to cover taxes and fees, including the Sanitation Fee, Lodging Tax, and National Registry of Residents (DNR).
The drop in Colombian tourists has resulted in a loss of 270,000 passengers, affecting the movement of people in the area. Almaguer is urging more decisive action from authorities to address this issue.
In response to these concerns, the federal government is considering implementing pre-registration for tourists from Colombia to avoid being denied entry. Bernardo Cuento Riestra, head of the Ministry of Tourism (Sedetur) in Quintana Roo, stated that the Federal Secretary of Tourism, Josefina Rodríguez Zamora, would be working with immigration authorities to keep the doors open to Colombian tourists.
The implementation of pre-registration for Colombian tourists is still under review and no date has been set. However, this move aims to mitigate the impact on local businesses and the economy caused by strict immigration policies.
