In Oaxaca, state and federal authorities removed a video surveillance network used by criminal groups in the municipality of Santa Cruz Huatulco.
A total of 40 closed-circuit cameras installed in public streets were removed. According to the state Attorney General’s Office, these devices “were used for surveillance purposes by criminal cells operating in that area of the Oaxaca coast.”
As a result, members of the National Guard, the Mexican Army, and the Attorney General’s Office proceeded to remove them from the streets, as reported Monday morning.
The surveillance cameras were placed at the disposal of the Attorney General’s Office (FGR) to continue the corresponding investigations. Although no one was arrested during this operation, “dozens of doses of drugs” (the type of substance was not specified) and a motorcycle were seized.
“These decisive actions to combat crime are part of the state’s public security strategy stemming from the ‘Campaign to Combat Drug Dealing and Prohibited Substances,’ through which different types of operations are being implemented in this area of Oaxaca,” the state Attorney General’s Office detailed.
While it was stated that the surveillance cameras were used by criminal groups, no details were given as to which groups were involved, so the investigation is ongoing.
Jocha Lodging Searched
In the last two weeks of February, on different days, five young men from Tlaxcala were reported missing on the Oaxaca coast.
Their bodies were found in early March inside a vehicle in the municipality of San José Miahuatlán, Puebla. The victims were identified by the initials A. L. P. G.; R. E. G. L.; N. Y. L. M.; J. A. M. C. and G. G. C. V.
As part of the investigation, on March 16, it was reported that federal and state authorities in Oaxaca inspected a property where the young men were believed to have stayed.
The search was carried out at Hospedaje Jocha, located in Huatulco, where the victims’ personal belongings were found (the type of items was not specified).
“The investigations indicate that the victims may have been staying at this location, which is why the search was carried out,” stated the state prosecutor’s office.
Two days earlier, an operation was carried out to search the Santa Cruz Huatulco Municipal Police headquarters. The officers’ weapons were seized during these operations, as part of the investigations related to the disappearance of the five young men.
