At least five people were killed and several others injured by firearms in a clash between residents of San Francisco Coatlán and San Sebastián Coatlán, in the Sierra Sur region, which led to the closure of the Oaxaca-Puerto Escondido highway for several hours.

The General Secretariat of Government confirmed that the residents of San Francisco Coatlán were attacked while working on land where a highway interchange is being built, near the Barranca Larga-Ventanilla highway.

It explained that, according to the report received through the 911 emergency service, this incident occurred when residents of that community in the Sierra Sur region went to collect wood in the El Limar area.

Preliminary reports, the agency added, included two deaths and several injuries. Several others were taken to the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) Hospital in Miahuatlán de Porfirio Díaz and to the Health Center.

State police and National Guard personnel arrived at the scene. The state government has informed the Oaxaca State Attorney General’s Office (FGEO) to investigate these events.

For his part, Esaú Ramírez Gijón, director of the Miahuatlán Rural Hospital (IMSS-Bienestar), reported that medical care is being provided to five residents of San Francisco Coatlán who were injured by a firearm in the incident reported this morning in the El Limar area.

He explained that all of their pain has been stabilized, wounds have been treated, and bleeding has been stopped. Extremities have been immobilized with bandages, as appropriate.

These individuals, all male, were admitted to the emergency room after being referred from the Expanded Services Health Center (CESSA) in San Sebastián Coatlán.

As established by law, these events were reported to the Miahuatlán Public Prosecutor’s Office for the initiation of appropriate proceedings, and to the State Police for the protection of the hospital.
