The beaches of Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo recorded an unusual increase in waves this Wednesday, according to the Guerrero Department of Comprehensive Risk Management and Civil Protection. These conditions are expected to continue for the next 48 hours, so the population and tourists are advised to exercise extreme caution.
According to the Department of the Navy, westerly winds are currently blowing between 10 and 15 knots, with gusts of up to 20 knots, and waves reaching between 6 and 8 feet in height. However, a swell-related phenomenon has been ruled out.
Despite the strong waves, the port remains open to navigation. However, rescue teams have reinforced beach surveillance to prevent swimmers from entering the sea if the currents intensify.
Authorities have asked restaurateurs and service providers to remove beach furniture and equipment from areas near the shore as a preventative measure against possible damage from the high waves.
