Michigan Couple Imprisoned in Mexico Over Timeshare Dispute

A Michigan couple, Paul and Christy Akeo, found themselves in a Mexican maximum-security prison after arriving at Cancun International Airport on March 4 for spring break. Their passports were flagged by customs due to outstanding criminal fraud charges linked to a payment dispute with Palace Resorts, a timeshare company. The couple had previously contested charges totaling $116,587 on their American Express card, claiming the resort had canceled their reservations. They won the dispute and had traveled to Cancun multiple times afterward without incident.

The conditions in the prison are reportedly harsh. Paul, a retired U.S. Navy Chief Petty Officer, and Christy, who has lost 25 pounds in just 20 days, are facing severe challenges. Christy’s daughter alleges that the prison serves her food she is allergic to, causing a rash that remains untreated.

The timeshare company has allegedly demanded $250,000, a non-disclosure agreement, and a public apology on social media accepting full blame. The couple’s attorney has described these demands as extortion and “hostage-taking,” accusing the Mexican judiciary of corruption. A court has granted the resort six months to gather evidence, denying the couple’s request for house arrest.

The family is urging American authorities to intervene, with Rep. Tom Barrett (R-MI) advocating for White House and State Department involvement. However, the couple’s attorney has criticized Michigan Senators Elissa Slotkin and Gary Peters for their lack of action.

This case highlights the risks U.S. travelers may face abroad, particularly in disputes involving timeshares. The family hopes public pressure will lead to their release and resolution of the conflict.
