The organization Seres Libres A.C. reported the death of Oli, the donkey who was a victim of animal abuse in Querétaro. Her death occurred after months of medical treatment, having suffered severe burns.

With deep sorrow, bewilderment, pain, sadness, and a heart full of sadness, we report that our beloved Oli, the bravest donkey in the world, whom we were fortunate enough to welcome into our lives after suffering unspeakable cruelty, has passed away…

According to reports shared by the association, Oli was burned with gasoline by a man identified as Casimiro “N,” presumably because the animal had entered his land. The donkey, who was pregnant at the time of the attack, suffered a miscarriage as a result of the burns.

Oli was rescued in August 2024 by the animal rights organization. Seres Libres’ publications indicated that she suffered severe burns after the attacker poured gasoline on her and set one of her legs on fire. Due to the severity of her injuries, veterinarians were forced to amputate the affected limb.

“We just rescued this poor donkey. Her story is very painful. A sick bastard set one of her legs on fire with gasoline just because she trespassed on his land. She was pregnant and sadly suffered a miscarriage due to the pain,” Seres Libres explained in their first posts about the case.

During medical treatment, Ren and Eli, managers of Seres Libres, sought specialized care for Oli, while simultaneously filing complaints against the person responsible for the attack. According to the organization, the donkey received care from equine specialists in the country.

Oli, against all odds, continued fighting for her life. Mexico’s best equine veterinarians couldn’t believe that Oli was enduring so much pain and still fighting for her life.

In September 2024, the organization shared updates on the animal’s health:

Update on our beautiful Oli. She’s a warrior, doing much better, eating well, and in good spirits. Her infection is subsiding, and the swelling in the amputated area has gone down. Oli is fighting to live, and we are fighting for justice.

Despite medical efforts, Oli has not recovered from the after-effects of the attack. The organization Seres Libres has reported that there is a formal complaint filed with the Prosecutor’s Office with direct witnesses and the identification of the alleged perpetrator.

The organization has mentioned the governor of Querétaro, Mauricio Kuri, in its posts:

“We will continue to fight for her justice, even though Mauricio Kuri lied and covered up for the criminal and murderer,” they stated in their statement following Oli’s death.

The case has generated reactions on social media under the hashtag #JusticiaParaOli. The Toby Foundation posted:

We are tired of rulers who cover up abusers because, oh, how lazy to deal with animal rights activists, I’d rather lie and close the case because they’re just animals, right?

Seres Libres has stated that they will continue their legal action:

We won’t stop until we see the madman who set her on fire with gasoline behind bars. We have a mission.

In their final message, Ren and Eli expressed:

Today we thank Oli for having met the bravest donkey in the whole world. Today we ask for forgiveness for not keeping all the promises we made to her, but we also say goodbye by assuring her that we love her with every cell in our bodies.
