This Wednesday, the Mexico City Citizen Security Secretariat (SSC-CDMX) implemented a surprise operation in the Doctores neighborhood, specifically at the intersection of Eje Central Lázaro Cárdenas and Fray Servando Teresa de Mier, to detect vehicles with prohibited license plates, hidden license plates, and motorcyclists riding without helmets.
The mobilization is part of the “Saving Lives” program, which seeks to strengthen road safety, prevent evasion of sanctions through modified or hidden license plates, and encourage the use of protective equipment among motorcyclists.
What types of license plates are prohibited?
During the operation, traffic officers checked that vehicle license plates were fully visible and free of accessories that hinder their reading, such as:
License plates that partially cover letters, numbers, holograms, or QR codes.
Frames with reflective or very shiny materials that obscure visibility.
Devices that allow the content of the license plates to be hidden or modified.
Intentionally altered or damaged license plates.
Motorcycles were also inspected, and emphasis was placed on penalizing those not wearing safety helmets, a mandatory requirement intended to reduce injuries in the event of an accident.
How much is the fine for using prohibited license plate holders?
According to Mexico City Traffic Regulations, the fine for driving with license plate holders that obstruct the visibility of the license plate can be:
