Surprise operation against license plate holders in the Doctores neighborhood of Mexico City today

7

This Wednesday, the Mexico City Citizen Security Secretariat (SSC-CDMX) implemented a surprise operation in the Doctores neighborhood, specifically at the intersection of Eje Central Lázaro Cárdenas and Fray Servando Teresa de Mier, to detect vehicles with prohibited license plates, hidden license plates, and motorcyclists riding without helmets.

The mobilization is part of the “Saving Lives” program, which seeks to strengthen road safety, prevent evasion of sanctions through modified or hidden license plates, and encourage the use of protective equipment among motorcyclists.

What types of license plates are prohibited?

During the operation, traffic officers checked that vehicle license plates were fully visible and free of accessories that hinder their reading, such as:

License plates that partially cover letters, numbers, holograms, or QR codes.
Frames with reflective or very shiny materials that obscure visibility.
Devices that allow the content of the license plates to be hidden or modified.
Intentionally altered or damaged license plates.
Motorcycles were also inspected, and emphasis was placed on penalizing those not wearing safety helmets, a mandatory requirement intended to reduce injuries in the event of an accident.

How much is the fine for using prohibited license plate holders?

According to Mexico City Traffic Regulations, the fine for driving with license plate holders that obstruct the visibility of the license plate can be:

Between 10 and 20 Units of Measurement and Update (UMA).
This is equivalent to a fine ranging from approximately $1,131 to $2,262 pesos.
In addition, the vehicle could be impounded, depending on the severity of the violation or if other violations are detected.

Are your license plate holders original?

Many drivers expressed doubts about the operation, asking if license plate holders installed by a dealer could be punishable. The authorities have clarified that NOT ALL license plate holders are prohibited, but they must meet one fundamental condition: they must not cover or alter any part of the license plate.

Recommendations to avoid fines:
Make sure your license plates are fully visible.
Avoid license plate holders with decorations, lights, or shiny metallic materials.
Clean your license plates regularly to ensure they are legible.
If you are a motorcyclist, wear a helmet at all times.
Simultaneous operations in Mexico City
We recommend: This will cost you money if you drive without license plates in Mexico City and Edomex. This also applies to motorcycles!
This operation was not the only one in the city. Similar actions were carried out at other strategic points as part of a comprehensive vehicle inspection strategy to strengthen compliance with the regulations. Authorities emphasized that this is a preventative measure, not a revenue-generating measure, whose primary purpose is to safeguard the lives of all road users.
