Five alleged hitmen from the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) were arrested by Chiapas authorities during an operation in the municipality of Villa de Corzo.
According to preliminary information, the detainees were identified as José “N”, Miguel “N”, Cristian “N”, and Favio “N”, along with a minor whose identity has been withheld. They are accused of carrying weapons for the exclusive use of the Army and of their alleged links to a criminal cell based south of Tuxtla Gutiérrez.
The five detainees had already been reported by residents of Villa de Corzo for allegedly being part of a criminal cell, according to the Chiapas People’s Security Secretariat (SSPCH).
In the images of the presentation of the alleged hitmen, two of them are seen wearing tactical vests with the acronym CJNG, as well as a .22 mm caliber rifle, a radio, and several rounds of ammunition. It was also reported that the detainees were in possession of three vehicles (two pickup trucks and a motorcycle) and several bags containing a dry, green herb (characteristics of marijuana).
Members of the Reaction Force also participated in the arrest. Inmediata Pakal (FRIP) and the State Preventive Police (PEP) in coordination with the Intelligence and Criminal Investigation Agency, the National Guard, and the Secretariat of National Defense.
The detainees will be handed over to the competent authorities for the development of the corresponding investigations; meanwhile, it was confirmed that security operations with elements from all three levels of government will continue in the Frayba region of Chiapas.
It is worth remembering that in its report “Chiapas, in the spiral of armed and criminal violence,” the Fray Bartolomé de las Casas Center for Human Rights points to the war between the CJNG and the Sinaloa Cartel as one of the factors responsible for the 100 percent increase in the number of missing persons and the more than 15,000 forcibly displaced people between January and June 2024 alone.
The Frayba Center emphasizes that 35 percent of the displaced are related to the violent war for control of drug and human trafficking routes. Hence, the areas with the most victims are those located on the border with Guatemala, right where the formation of another criminal group originated: the Chiapas and Guatemala Cartel.
